KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—No. 9 nationally ranked UC San Diego took two of three doubles matches, waited through a long rain delay, and then captured five of six singles matches to take a 7-2 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Friday night at the Holua Tennis Center.
Earlier today, the Vulcans opened the 2018 season with a 9-0 victory over Chaminade. They are now 1-1 on the season, while the Tritons improved to 2-3.
Host UH Hilo picked up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Devanshi Bhimjiyani picked up her second singles win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Becky Chou. On the third court in doubles,
Sara Marin and
Irena Le edged UCSD's Chloe Wight and Nousha Nowamooz, 8-6.
But it was all Tritons the rest of match—one that began in the daylight and finished under the lights. Ashley Chao tripped up No. 38 ranked
Daniela Sanz, 6-3, 6-2 on court one, as all the Triton victories came in straight sets. UCSD is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II West Region.
After two matches today, the Vulcans will take Saturday off before hosting Chaminade again on Sunday (9 a.m.) at the Holua Tennis Center.
