KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—The Hawai`i Hilo women's tennis team got the 2018 season underway and off to a good start with a 9-0 win over Chaminade on Friday morning at the Holua Tennis Center.
The Vulcans will grab lunch and then play later today at 2 p.m. against No. 9 nationally ranked UC San Diego.
The Vulcans took down the Silverswords in straight sets.
Daniela Sanz and
Devanshi Bhimjiyani got things rolling at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win (pro set format) and Marina Colvee\
Carmelle Joyner followed suit with the same score.
Sara Marin and
Irena Le wrapped up doubles play at No. 3 with an 8-0 win.
Singles went a similar path. Sanz and Bhimjiyani sat out, moving Colvee up to No. 1. The San Diego State transfer won 6-2, 6-1, while Marin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Joyner didn't drop a game at No. 3, Le won 6-0, 6-1 on court four,
Cheyenne Schula triumphed on five (6-0, 6-3) and
Gabriela Aguilar Lawlor wrapped up the match on court six (6-0, 6-0).
It was the first match of the season for both teams. Chaminade will be back on the court tomorrow to take on UC San Diego at 9 a.m.
