KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii—For the second day in a row, the Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team pulled off a stunning win over a nationally ranked team. For the second day in a row, it wasn't that close.
On Saturday, the unranked Vulcans took down island rival and No. 8 nationally Hawai`i Pacific, by the same 7-2 count that they defeated No. 15 UC San Diego the day before. On both days, they took two of three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles encounters.
Four of UH Hilo's five singles wins were in straight sets—that's not to say that they were not tightly contested. No. 17 nationally ranked
Vaclav Slezak edged No. 27 Benjamin Loccisano, 6-4, 7-5 on court one, and on the sixth court
Gregory Zukeran clipped Adrian Elduque, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 5, Arturo Dell`eva went three sets before dispatching of Juan Erro, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2.
Newcomers and freshmen
Alessandro Giuliato and
Chun En Wu won on courts two and three by the same counts of 6-4, 6-1. Wu beat No. 46
th ranked Gerado Irrarrazabal, while Giuliato took care of Maxime Gayte. Both also won their matches versus UC San Diego.
In doubles, Slezak and Giuliato cruised at No. 1 to an 8-3 win, while Zukeran and Wu won at No. 3, 8-5.
The Sharks will have another shot at the Vulcans on Monday at Holua Tennis Center when the two teams square off again at 2 p.m.
