KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i--It was sorta deja vu all over again for the Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team on Monday during a 6-3 victory over No. 8 nationally ranked Hawai`i Pacific.

For the second time in 48 hours, the Vulcans knocked off the defending Pacific West Conference champions at the Holua Tennis Center. On Saturday, the count was 7-2. On Friday, UH Hilo stopped No. 15 UC San Diego by the same 7-2 score.

"That makes for a pretty good weekend," understated Vulcan head coach Tina McDermott. "This group has really worked hard all fall and winter. We have a long road ahead, but I knew that they were capable of this. This will hopefully motivate them, knowing that this hard work pays off."

The Sharks advanced all the way to the NCAA quarterfinals last year.

The Vulcans won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles bouts. Three of the singles matches went three sets, and UH Hilo's lone loss in doubles went to a tie-breaker.

Freshman Chun En Wu and junior Gregory Zukeran wrapped up perfect weekends with wins in both singles and doubles. Wu won at No. 3 singles over Jack Lyttle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Zukeran topped Adrian Elduque on court six, 6-2, 7-5. That duo then teamed to win on the third doubles court, 8-2. Both were 6-0 on the weekend (3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles). 

Vaclav Slezak beat Benjamin Loccisano at No. 1 in a battle of nationally ranked players for the second time this weekend (6-4, 6-1) and Arturo Dell`eva remained unbeaten in singles play on court five with a three-set win over Juan Erro, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato improved to 3-0 on court one in doubles witth an 8-1 win.

The Vulcans will now get more practice court time before playing on March 9 on the UH Hilo campus courts against Bethel.
