LIVERMORE, Calif.--The Hawai`i Hilo men's golf team battled cold weather, wet weather, lightning and themselves on Monday during the first round of the Bay Area Invitational.
Play was halted three quarters of the way through the second round (lightning) at the Wente Golf Course. The second round will resume on Tuesday, along with the third and final round of play.
The Vulcans sit in 11th place of 16 teams after the first round (327).
Taylor Patrick was the only UH Hilo player under 80 (78) on a day when the low score was a 72. Temperatures in the high 30's and low 40's greeted the golfers, and rain was their companion most of the day.
Through the first round, Dixie State was the team leader (305), followed closely by Holy Names (308), Colorado School of Mines (309) and Sonoma State (309).
The medalist leader after 18 holes was Zach Sims of Holy Names (72). St. Mary's Roman Aragon and Alex Marsh (Rogers State) were next, turning in 73's.Â
After Taylor's 78, the next two best scores for the Vulcans were 81's carded by
Warren Miller and
Jared Kinoshita.
