LAS VEGAS, Nev.—In any sport, and tennis certainly fits the bill, the final score is sometimes not an indication of how close the match was.
This would be one of those times.
The Hawai`i Hilo women's tennis team lost to No. 12 nationally ranked Midwestern State (Tex.) on Tuesday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, 8-1. But that doesn't come close to telling the whole story, as all six singles matches on the afternoon either went three sets or featured a tie-breaker, with the Mustangs winning five of them.
Midwestern State improved to 4-4 on the season, while the Vulcans dropped to 3-4.
Sophomore transfer (San Diego State)
Marina Colvee picked up the lone win on the day for UH Hilo, clipping Ashley Ramirez at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. Seniors Danielle Sanz and
Sara Marin lost in three sets each on court two and three, as did freshmen
Carmelle Joyner (court five) and
Irena Le (No. 6). On court one,
Devanshi Bhimjiyani fell to Maddy Coffman, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.
Bhimjiyani and Sanz also lost a nail-biter on the first doubles court to Coffman and Ramirez, 8-7.
The Vulcans continue their Vegas stay with a Wednesday match vs. No. 8 Indianapolis.
