OAKLAND, Calif.—The Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team battled through some tough matches at the top of the ladder but still prevailed with an 8-1 win over Holy Names on Saturday afternoon at the Meyer Tennis Court.
The victory, UH Hilo's fifth in a row, improves their record 8-1 on the year and to 8-0 against NCAA Division II teams. Holy Names is now 3-9.
No. 17 ranked
Vaclav Slezak won a battle at No. 1 singles against Alexandre Vinee-Munoz, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), and
Alessandro Giuliato had to outlast Hugo Colpart on court two, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
But Vinee-Munoz and Colpart got the better of Slezak and Giuliato at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. It was just the second loss of the year for the UHH duo (7-2).
The rest of the matches went down in straight sets for the deep Vulcan team.
Chun En Wu,
Alex Fillat Perez, Arturo Dell`eva and
Gregory Zukeran collected singles victories, while the combinations of Fillat Perez and
Bruno Figlia and Zukeran and Wu won easily in doubles.
The Vulcan men now head south for a batch of matches, beginning with a duel with San Diego Christian on Tuesday.
