LA JOLLA, Calif.—The Hawaii Hilo women's tennis team dug an early hole in doubles and then ran into some of the NAIA's best players in singles before falling to San Diego Christian on Tuesday night at the UC San Diego courts in La Jolla.
The Vulcans fell to 6-6 on the season with the loss, while San Diego Christian, ranked No. 12 nationally in the NAIA, moved to 6-4 on the year.
UH Hilo gained wins at No. 3 singles with
Sara Marin, at No. 5 singles with
Carmelle Joyner and at No. 3 doubles with the tandem of
Irena Le and Marin.
But the Vulcans lost at the top two singles spots, where a pair of nationally ranked "Sarahs" prevailed. Sarah Schaerer, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, outlasted UHH's
Devanshi Bhimjiyani 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, while No. 14 Sarah Urbanek topped
Daniela Sanz, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, the Hawks ran away with matches on the first two courts, while Marin and Le gathered a team point with an 8-3 win over Paula Vasquez and Miriam Boeta. Sanz and Bhimjiyani lost to Urbanek and Nadine Geschke, who are ranked No. 5 nationally.
Next up for the Vulcans is a Saturday match at Concordia. Start time is 10 am Pacific at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
