AZUSA, Calif.—Host Azusa Pacific snapped a four-match losing streak with an 8-1 women's tennis win over Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday afternoon at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The No. 7 nationally ranked Cougars, who were 10-2 earlier this month before dropping four straight (two by just one point), improved to 11-6 on the season. The Vulcans dropped to 7-8.
The Vulcans picked up their lone win on singles court No. 6, where freshman
Gabriela Aguilar Lawlor won in just her second collegiate match, 6-4, 1-4, and retired over Taitiana Betancourt.
Daniela Sanz also gave a terrific run at Diana Baumgartnere on court two before falling 6-1, 5-7, 10-4. Same for
Carmelle Joyner at No. 4, where the freshman lost for just the third time this year (11-3) to No. 73 nationally ranked April Wong (from Kealakehe HS), 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. The Vulcans also lost a tight one at No. 2 doubles where Joyner and
Marina Colvee fell 8-6 to Baumgartnere and Kara Hinton.
The Vulcans will wrap up this three-week trip and the regular season with a Friday match at Point Loma.
