SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Red-hot Point Loma won all the tight matches on a Friday afternoon to sweep visiting Hawai`i Hilo, 9-0 at the PLNU Tennis Courts.
The Sea Lions, ranked No. 18 nationally, and winners of nine of their last ten matches, improved to 15-4 on the season. The Vulcans, playing their final match of a long road trip and their last regular season contest, fell to 7-9.
UH Hilo lost three-set matches at first, fourth and fifth singles, and all three doubles matches were fairly close.
Devanshi Bhimjiyani fell at No. 1 singles to Nikki Newell, 6-4, 6-7, 10-5, Mari Colvee fell on court four to Ellie Gamble 6-2, 6-7, 11-9, and
Carmelle Joyner lost at No. 5 to Michelle Torres, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles, the Vulcans fell on courts one and three by 8-5 scores, and Colvee and Joyner lost a tight one on court two to Caroline Cuevas and Gabi Armas, 8-6.
The Vulcans now rest and prepare for the Pacific West Conference Championships, to be held April 18-21 in Surprise, Arizona.
