Strong second half leads Sea Lions to win

Box Score HILO, Hawai`i—A terrific first half didn't translate into 40 minutes of terrific for the UH Hilo women's basketball team on Saturday night at the Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans fell to the Point Loma Sea Lions, 66-50, as the visitors outscored the home team 30-17 in the second half. Point Loma broke away after leading by just three at the half (36-33), with UH Hilo leading after a fast paced first quarter (20-19).

The win moves the Sea Lions record to 7-5 in the Pacific West Conference and 8-10 overall. They have now won six of their last eight games. The Vulcans dropped their seventh straight to move to 4-10 on the year and to 1-9 in conference play.

Allie Navarette tallied her seventh double-double of the year with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-0 sophomore converted 14-of-15 free throw attempts. Carol Schroeder had a double-double for the Sea Lions with 12 points and 12 boards, Sydney Peterson 13 points and Grace Brady had ten points and three blocked shots.

Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter, as Navarette's three-point play gave her team a 20-19 margin at the end of ten minutes. Neither squad led by more than four points in the second quarter as Peterson's basket right before the end of time gave the Sea Lions a three-point lead at intermission.

But PLNU took over in the third quarter. After a Navarette three-pointer (yes from behind the arch) tied the game at 36-36, Point Loma outscored their opponents 12-4 for the rest of the period, leading 49-40 after 30 minutes.

The Sea Lions, who have qualified the NCAA tournament the last two seasons, added to their lead in the fourth quarter before settling for the 66-50 final.

The Vulcans will now hit the road for a pair of game in northern California, taking on Holy Names on Thursday (Jan. 24) and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday (Jan. 26).
