WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – UH Hilo cut 18 strokes off their second round score and freshman Michelle Kim finished tied for 12th at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Wednesday at the Waikoloa Beach Course.
The Vulcans stayed in eighth place despite the improvement (313-322-306), as Concordia (Ore.) took the team title (+46). Sonoma State was second (+50) and Western Washington finished third (+61).
Kim had a consistent three days in just her second collegiate tournament. She shot a collegiate career best of 74 on the par-70 course in Wednesday's final round, ending up with a total tally of +16 (77-75-74). Sophomore Kaelyn Uchida was the next Vulcan on the leader board at +19, tied for 19th (70-83-76). Uchida was the first-day leader with career-best 70 on Monday.
Concordia's Cammie Decker and Isabel Carpenter of Cal State Monterey Bay shared co-medalist honors at +4. Carpenter shot a final round 70 to cut three shots off of Decker's Tuesday lead to pull into a tie. Brenda Dominguez of Western New Mexico took third at +6.
After Kim and Uchida, the next Vulcans were freshmen Tia Kualii at +30 (79-83-78) and Taryn Taguma (87-81-78=+36). On Wednesday, Kiri Oshiro fired a career best 76.
That was the final tournament of the calendar year for the Vulcans. Their next competition will be the St. Edwards Invitational in Austin, Tex., Feb. 24-25.
