This Week in Vulcan Men's Soccer
Record:Â 1-5 (0-1 PWC)
Wednesday, Oct. 9Â vs. Notre Dame de Namur (4-5/1-2 PWC), UHH Campus Field, 7 pm
Home is Where the Matches are: The UH Hilo men's soccer team will kick off a three-match homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 9) versus Notre Dame de Namur. Start time is 7 p.m. This year, "home" means in Hilo and on campus. The Vulcans will play all seven of their home tilts this fall on the upper field (they played at Kamehameha School the past three seasons). Plans for a new on-campus soccer complex is in the works and is expected to be completed by 2020 or 2021.
Red and Free:Â Vulcan fans are encouraged to wear red on Wednesday for the annual Red Out Game. All fans wearing red will have their names entered into a halftime drawing for "soccer fan bags." In 2019, there is free admission for UH Hilo (and HCC) students, faculty and staff.
Â
Streaming Live: All Vulcan home matches are now available (for the first time) via pay-per-view through the Vulcan website at hiloathletics.com. Live Stats (free) can also be accessed through the same venue. To do either, go to the website and to Men's Soccer. Click on the Schedule, and follow the links. Cost for a single game is $7.95 and a Season Pass can be had for $39.95. A Season Pass for both women's and men's soccer costs just $49.95.
Oahu Success: Over the weekend on Oahu, the Vulcans picked up their first win of the season (3-2 over Chaminade) and played Hawaii Pacific tough (2-0 loss). The narrow deficit to the Sharks came one week after falling to the same HPU team by a 6-1 count.
Scoring Outburst: After scoring a total of three goals in their first four matches, the Vulcans broke out at Chaminade by scoring three goals in just EIGHT minutes. UH Hilo scored right before the half when
Israel Kalili picked up a deflection and deposited it. 14 seconds into the second half, Kalei Tolentino-Perry scored for the first time as a Vulcan, and
Jorge Martinez added insurance (which the Vulcans would need) at 51:06.
Saving the Day: Vulcan goalkeeper
Michael Harre was busy last weekend on Oahu. He had six saves in the win over Chaminade and five in the loss to Hawaii Pacific. His 11 saves were the most in the PacWest over the weekend. On the season, the junior transfer from Maryville University is second in the PacWest in saves with 5.17 per match.
Four for Six: Four different Vulcans have supplied UH Hilo's six goals on the year.
Jorge Martinez has two, both on penalty kicks, and also has an assist.
Pedro Werneck also has two goals, while Kalei Tolentino-Perry and
Israel Kalili have one score each.
Tommy Seaver and
Gabriel Contreras have assists. Tolentino-Perry, the local product (Hilo HS) that transferred from San Jose State, leads with 23 shots on the year, ten of them on goal.
NDNU Notes: The Argonauts (4-5, 1-1 in PacWest) are looking to wrap up their three-match trip to Hawaii with a win. Their island trip thus far has yielded losses to Hawaii Pacific (3-1) and Chaminade (2-1). NDNU has wins over Academy of Art and Holy Names, and they opened the year 2-0 with victories over San Francisco State and Missouri-St. Louis. The Argos were picked to finish fifth in the PacWest Preseason poll, and featured Josh Santillian and Moises Claudio on the All-Preseason team. Those who were on the Vulcan team last year might have revenge on their minds after NDNU won last year's match in Belmont, 8-1. The Argonauts lead the all-time series, 14-1-2.
Around the PacWest: Unbeaten (9-0) and No. 2 nationally ranked Azusa Pacific is 2-0 in the PacWest, as is Point Loma. In the United Soccer West Region poll, the Cougars are No. 1, followed by….(2) Cal State LA 7-0-0, (3) Cal State San Bernardino 3-1-1, (4) Simon Fraser 3-1-0, (5) Chico State 5-1-0, (6) UC San Diego 6-1-0, (7) Western Washington 3-3-0, (8) Point Loma 4-3-0, (9) Saint Martin's 5-1-1, (10) Northwest Nazarene 4-2-0.
Last Year: The Vulcans went 4-12 overall and 3-8 in the Pacific West Conference. They won their season opener against nationally ranked Western Washington and upset Concordia late in the season for their signature wins under first-year coach
Paul Regrutto.
The Coach: Paul Regrutto returned to take the reins of the program in 2018, after five successful seasons as the head women's coach at Colorado State-Pueblo. Regrutto was the RMAC Coach of the Year in 2016 after leading the Thunderwolves to their first NCAA tournament appearance. Back in 2006, the Colorado native was UH Hilo's first ever men's soccer coach, leading the squad to a 5-9-1 record.
What's Next:Â The Vulcans remain home with matches next week on Wednesday (Oct. 16) against Dominican and Saturday (Oct. 19) versus Fresno Pacific. Both games will kick off at 7 p.m.
