KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—Hawai`i Hilo won all three doubles matches but Holy Names rallied to take five of the six singles bouts for a 5-2 women's tennis victory on Friday morning at the Holua Tennis Center.
The Hawks improved to 2-0 with the victory, while the Vulcans fall to 0-2.
Carmelle Joyner was the only double winner on the day for UH Hilo, and the only singles victor as well. She won quickly on court No. 3 in singles over Symone Jacques (6-1, 6-2), and teamed with
Anouk van Hoek to win at No. 1 in doubles, 6-4.
All three doubles matches were close, with
Irena Le and
Marina Colvee playing the longest on court two, outlasting Jacques and Rutendo Gwaze, 7-6 (7-4). Colvee also had the longest singles match of the day, eventually falling to Lada Baglaeva in the only three-set match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, after the Hawks had already clinched the team score.
The Vulcans will play the second of their four matches in four days at Holua on Saturday at noon against Chaminade.
