KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—No. 10 nationally ranked Hawai`i Hilo swept doubles play and won the three singles matches at the top of the ladder to defeat UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon at the Holua Tennis Center, 4-0.
The three remaining singles matches were stopped as soon as
Alessandro Giuliato's 6-2, 6-0 win over Sahm Irvine was complete on court two, UH Hilo's fourth win of the day.
UH Hilo is now 2-0 on the season, while the Tritons dropped to 1-4. UCSD's other losses have been to #13 Azusa Pacific (4-2), #15 Hawai`i Pacific (5-2) and Division I San Diego State (6-1). They also defeated Holy Names (6-1) on this trip to the Big Island.
In addition to Giuliato, the Vulcans also got wins from
Vaclav Slezak on court one (6-1, 6-1) and freshman
Martin Soukal at No. 3 (6-4, 6-3).
Slezak and Giuliato, ranked 12
th nationally in doubles, topped UCSD's tandem of Sreeganesh Manoharan and Zach Ermert (6-3).
Luca Checchia and
Alan Cincunegui rolled on court three (6-0) and
Chun En Wu and Soukal did the same on court two (6-2).
The Vulcans are ranked No. 1 in the West Region and the Tritons are No. 4. On Sunday, the Vulcans will square off with island rival Hawai`i Pacific, who is ranked 15
th nationally and No. 3 in the west. Start time at Holua is 2 p.m.
