NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Visiting Hawai`i Hilo came just a couple of shots away from claiming the doubles competition but host Concordia controlled singles action during a 4-0 Eagles victory on Tuesday morning at the Tennis Club of Newport Beach.
Concordia improved to 8-7 on the year with the victory while the Vulcans dropped to 3-8. UH Hilo will wrap up this long road trip with a Friday match in San Diego against Point Loma.
Anouk van Hoek and
Carmelle Joyner cruised to a doubles win on court one (6-0), while the tandem of
Marina Colvee and
Irena Le lost on court two. That set the stage for the tiebreaking match on court three, and it was a dandy. With the doubles team point on the line, Concordia's Samantha Schuster and Halle Van Natta won a razor's edge close tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).
In singles play, the Eagles won straight set matches on courts one, three and five to claim the win. Left unfinished for the Vulcans was van Hoek on court two, who was just heading to a third set, Joyner on court four (second set) and Le on court six (third set).
"Despite the loss, we played much better in doubles today," said head coach
Kallen Mizuguchi after the match. "That was the best doubles of the whole trip, against a good team (Concordia). We are working on getting better."
