Sea Lion women push past Vulcans

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—UH Hilo had some positive tennis results on Friday night at Point Loma, but none that transferred into team points during a 4-0 loss to the Sea Lions.

The Vulcans wrap up their northern-southern California trip at 3-9 on the year. They finish the regular season next weekend (April 5-7) with three matches at Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific. Point Loma improved to 8-4 with the win.

UH Hilo won at No. 1 doubles when Anouk Van Hoek and Carmelle Joyner eked out a 7-6 (7-3) win over Gabi Armas and Ellie Gamble. But with losses at the other two doubles spots, their win didn't count towards a team point.

The Sea Lions clinched the match with wins on singles courts one, three and six. The Vulcans had solid chances to win on the other three courts but they were left unfinished. Van Hoek split the first two sets, Joyner was up a break in the third set and Hina Nishida was up a game in the third set.

UH Hilo needs one team win in either of their matches against Chaminade to secure a spot in the Pacific West Conference Championships, April 17-20 in Surprise, Arizona.
