No. 1 Barry ends best Vulcan season

ALAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—And just like that, it was over.

UH Hilo's magical run through the postseason came to an end on Thursday at the hands of the No. 1 team in the nation. Barry (Fla.) improved to 25-1 on the season with a 4-0 win over the Vulcans in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships at the Sanlando Tennis Center.

UH Hilo's best season comes to an end at 15-5, tying for third place in the country. It was their second loss to the Buccaneers this season, and for Barry it was their 84th tournament win, the most of any Division II school. Barry, who has won three D-II championships, will play No. 2 Columbus State on Friday for the national title. Columbus State defeated Hawai`i Pacific (4-1) to advance.

The match took just over three hours to complete and it was closer than the score would indicate.

The Bucs took two of three doubles match to claim the one team point, and then won singles bouts on courts one, five and three. The three unfinished matches were in the third set with the Vulcans leading in each when the match was halted.

In doubles, the Vulcans actually struck first on court one. Vaclav Slezak and Martin Soukal topped the No. 7 ranked team in the country in Blake Boyldon and Pierre Montrieul in quick fashion, 6-2. The Bucs responded with a fast 6-0 victory on court three, leaving the rubber match at No. 2.

There, BU's Alejandro Gallego and Filip Zupancic got an early break and made it last for a 6-4 win over Alessandro Giuliato and Chun En Wu to claim the team point.

In singles, Barry made it 2-0 on court one when No. 6 ranked Montrieul topped Slezak, 6-3, 6-2. On court five, Arturo Dell`Eva battled back but still fell to Vivien Versier, 6-2, 7-5 to give Barry a 3-0 lead.

The other four matches all went into the third set. Giuliato was just points away from claiming a win for the Vulcans, but Gallego fought him off. Soukal tried to do the same on court three but Carlos Gomez got up two breaks early in the third set and went on to win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Gomez's win clinched the match, with UHH's Giuliato, Wu and Luca Checchia all leading in the third set. Giuliato was up 5-4, Wu 4-1 and Checchia 4-2.

All six of Barry's singles players are nationally ranked.

"We battled hard against the premier program in Division II," said Vulcan head coach Kallen Mizuguchi. "I believe we showed that we belong. It was an incredible season. This team is very close and that really played a big role in our success this year."
