UH Hilo's 2019-20 senior class did not get a proper send off because of COVID-19. While some were able to have a Senior Day, all of them missed their Athletic Senior Sash Ceremony and official Graduation Ceremony.
Over the course of the next few months, we will highlight our seniors, two at a time. Instead of the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, it's now Pepsi Seniors of the Week. This week, we salute two senior soccer players--
Brandon Baca and
Selvin Sandoval.
Selvin Sandoval came to the Vulcan men's soccer program in 2018 after spending one season (redshirt) at American International College. He played in four matches as a junior, including starting against regional power Point Loma, recording 10 saves in the match. That ties for sixth in the Vulcan record books and gets Sandoval into the single-match top 10. Selvin graduated from UHH with a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and plans to attend Cal State University Dominguez Hills to pursue a teaching certificate.
Vulcan men's soccer player Jon
Brandon Baca is one of six seniors that graduated "virtually" last weekend. A local standout who came to UHH from Hilo High School, Baca was a part of the Vulcans soccer program for four seasons (2016-19). At this spring's men's soccer Zoom banquet, Brandon was presented with the program's Vulcan Award, given to the player that is a great teammate and exemplifies the highest level of character. The Kea`au native graduated with a degree in Marine Science.
Congrats to Jon Brandon and Selvin! You will be missed. The University of Hawai`i Hilo appreciates your dedication and contribution to Vulcan Athletics and wishes you the best in your future endeavors.
