HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Visiting Hawai`i Hilo never trailed and clamped down on host Chaminade in about every way possible in rolling to a 57-38 women's basketball victory on Sunday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium.
The Vulcans leave Oahu having evened up their record to 2-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Silverswords begin their season at 0-2.
UH Hilo outscored Chaminade 17-3 in the third quarter to cement the game. By game's end, the Vulcans had spread the wealth with four players in double figures, held Chaminade to 22 percent shooting and had 14 offensive rebounds to CUH's six.Â
Jenna Waki had 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for the Vulcans, and
Mandi Kawaha equaled her scoring output with 13.
Kim Schmelz added 11 and
Bree Olson had the first double-double of her Vulcan career with ten points and 12 boards.
Jordan Zader led Chaminade with 12 points.Â
The Vulcans, who defeated the Silverswords 56-39 on Saturday, broke open a 4-4 game early in the first quarter with a 11-2 run. They led 15-8 at the end of the first ten minutes, holding Chaminade to 3-of-15 shooting including 0-for-7 from behind the arch.
The Silverswords cut their deficit to four points twice in the second period, but an 8-3 UHH run pushed their lead to 28-19 at intermission. That run was capped by a Kawaha driving lay-up at the buzzer to give the visitors the nine-point lead.
After a slow start for both teams in the third (5-1 UHH through 5:30), the Vulcans would go on to a 17-3 rampage to take a 45-22 lead into the final ten minutes. In the third, Chaminade missed all ten of their field goal attempts, including 0-for-7 from three-point land. The Silverswords would play their best basketball in the final ten minutes, outscoring UHH 16-12 but the damage had already been done.
For the 40 minutes, the Vulcans outrebounded the 'Swords 46-37 and had just eight turnovers to CUH's 14. Chaminade finished with 22 percent accuracy from the field and were 3-for-29 from three-point range.
The Vulcans will return to Honolulu next weekend for Saturday and Sunday games at Hawai`i Pacific.
