HILO, Hawai'i-- The Vulcans put on a show tonight in one of their most dominant performances of the season. The Vulcans bounced back from Thursday's loss taking home a 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 volleyball win against Fresno Pacific.
UH Hilo will improve 14-5 overall and 11-4 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Sunbirds dropped 7-19 overall and 4-12 in the PacWest.
Bria Beale had seven kills in the first set to help her team earn the 25-19 win over Fresno Pacific. Ashton Jessee and Tani Hoke both had service aces, Kendall Kott put up 15 assists, and Beale delivered the last two kills to top the Sunbirds in the first frame.Â
UHH went off on a seven-point run to begin the second set. The Vulcans handed the Sunbirds a 25-11 loss in what could be the Vulcans most dominant set of the season.Â
Fresno Pacific came out strong in the third, running with a 6-1 lead over UH Hilo. After a strategic timeout by head coach Chris Leonard, the Vulcans turned around and started chipping away at FPU's lead. Sydney Gott and Samara Cruz got back-to-back kills, closing the gap to 6-3. Cruz also had two service aces to tie up the match 8-8. From there, the score went back-and-forth until UHH broke away at 21-21. Gott was responsible for three out of the five final points, but Kamilla Marinas was the Vulcan responsible for the final blow that sealed their win.
The Vulcans played some solid defense tonight. Kott handed out a total of 38 assists, Jessee had two solo blocks, and Beale had 18 digs. Beale also led the offense with 14 kills, followed by Gott and Cruz trailing with 10 a piece. The Vulcans accumulated six service aces - Cruz, Jessee, and Hoke contributed two each.Â
The Vulcans play next Wednesday, Nov. 10Â at 7pm HT against Point Loma.Â
