The women's basketball team topped nationally ranked Alaska Anchorage 76-73 in overtime, snapping the undefeated Seawolves eight-game winning streak.
The Vulcans came together for a great team win, but there were two players who particularly stood out. Congratulations to this week's Pepsi Athletes of the week, Mandi Kawaha (Hilo, Hawai'i/Hilo HS) and Heaven Samayoa-Mathis (Sacramento, Calif. / Sacramento HS).
Mandi Kawaha (Hilo, Hawai'i/Hilo HS)
Mandi Kawaha (Hilo, Hawai'i/Hilo HS) led the Vulcans with 21 points and 6 assists, and had the game-winning bucket in overtime (74-73). Kawaha shot 50 percent in the field, was 6-for-7 at the free throw line, and was 2-for-2 behind the arc. She also collected two rebounds and a steal against the Seawolves.
Heaven Samayoa-Mathis (Sacramento, Calif. / Sacramento HS)
Freshman Samayoa-Mathis was the second-highest Vulcan scorer setting a career high of 16 points. She was 5-for-7 in the field, 3-for-5 behind the arc, 2-for-3 at the free throw line, and had one assist in UH Hilo's upset over Alaska Anchorage.
