BOX SCORE
HILO, Hawai`i--UH Hilo senior
Kim Schmelz moved into second place on the all-time Vulcan scoring list and her team needed every bit of her team-high 14 points during a 53-46 comeback win over Chaminade on Sunday afternoon at Vulcan Gymnasium.
Schmelz, now with 988 career points, had eight of her counters in the second half as the Vulcans overcame a 13-point first quarter deficit for their fourth win this season against the Silverswords (4-4 overall). The Silverswords, who had big leads in each of the games this weekend, fell to 0-8.
Schmelz moved past Sheila Azevedo, who had 974 points from 2007-09.
Allie Navarette is UH Hilo's all-time leader with 1,398 points.
Mandi Kawaha joined Schmelz in double figures with 12 points, and
Malia Lee led the Vulcans in rebounds with eight. Arianna Blowe had a career-high 16 points to lead Chaminade.
Sunday's game looked a lot like Saturday's, with Chaminade rushing out to a big lead early.
Blowe scored the first seven points of the game and helped push her team to a 15-2 lead five minutes into the contest. But the Vulcans answered with an 11-0 run of its own to close to within one point at the end of the quarter (17-16) on
Bree Olson's three-pointer.
Olson's basket at the start of the second period gave UHH its first lead of the game, but Chaminade closed the half on a 6-0 blitz to lead at the break, 30-23.
The Vulcans climbed back in the third clinging to a two-point lead (39-37) heading into the final ten minutes. UHH then scored the first six points of the fourth to take their biggest lead of the game (eight points). The Silverswords would make one last comeback effort, pulling to within three points with a minute left on a trey by Blowe and free throws by Jordyn Zader, but Kawaha and Schmelz went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in their final two possessions to seal the win.
UH Hilo will now play games three and four of this final homestand, hosting Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday (2:30 pm) and Thursday (noon).
