KANEOHI, Hawai`i--UH Hilo had four of the top five finishers to open the 2020-21 women's cross country season with a 35-22 victory over host Hawai`i Pacific on Saturday morning on the HPU Loa campus.
HPU's Robyn Kaltenbrunn ran away from the field to win the race in 21:25 on the five kilometer course. But the Vulcans had the next four runners to cross the finish line, all within eight seconds of each other.
Olivia Jarvis was the top Vulcan and second overall in 23:02.4, followed closely by
Emma Heidelmeier (23:03.4), Makena Morria (23:10.3), and freshman
Leilani Stone (23:10.6).
Caitlin Kawaiaea finished ninth to round out the Vulcan scoring (24:55), Chaminade also competed in the meet, but didn't have enough members to score.
"The girls ran well," said Vulcan head coach
Jaime Guerpo. "To have that many girls running that close together is certainly our goal."
The three schools will race again next week, this time on the Big Island at the UH Hilo Invitational on Friday, Feb. 12. The meet will be held at the Naniloa Golf Course, starting at 4 p.m.
