A pair of 5-foot-8 guards, one wrapping up a career and the other just getting started are this week's UH Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week.
If this really was the last game in the highly successful career of
Kim Schmelz, she sure went out with a bang. The 5-foot-8 guard from Sacramento equaled her career high with 29 points in a 93-58 win over Chaminade that helped the Vulcans finish the year at 6-6. She rained home 7-of-10 three-point attempts, equaling the UH Hilo school record for most treys in a game. For the weekend, she totaled 38 points giving her 1,041 in her career, second all-time at UH Hilo. She also departs with 109 three-pointers (4th) and 153 free throws made (6th).She began her career at UH Hilo in the 2015-16 season, missing one full year with an injury and 24 of 26 games of another season with the same injury.
Darren Williams led the Vulcans on back-to-back days with 21 points each as the Vulcans wrapped the regular season on Oahu. The 5-foot-8 junior guard missed only three shots on Friday to help the Vulcans cruise past host Chaminade, 78-62. He was 7-for-10 from the field and was a season-best 5-of-8 from three-point range. On Saturday, he put up 21 points again, this time making hay at the free throw line on 8-of-8 shooting. For the weekend, he was a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe and was 8-of-17 from behind the arch. His 21 points was just two points shy of his season best. The Rancho Cucamonga,Calif. native averaged 14.4 points a game this season, led the squad with 26 three-pointers made in 12 games and also led the Vulcans in assists (37), free throw percengage (.830) and steals (25).
