Women's Soccer Season Wraps Up This Weekend

Is this short but productive spring soccer season for the UH Hilo women's team, they hope to come out better than even this time against Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific.

Back on February 27-28, the Vulcans battled to a 2-2 tie with Chaminade and then went scoreless against Hawaii Pacific (0-0).

The Silverswords and Sharks will will be the opponents again this coming Saturday and Sunday in this Hawaii Pod-only schedule. And, as it turns out, St. Louis Field on the campus of Chaminade/St. Louis School, is the home away from home for the UH Hilo men's and women's soccer teams this spring, with both matches being played at St. Louis--like their last two matches at the end of the month.

The Vulcans were originally scheduled to host both the Silverswords and Sharks in Hilo, but the new Vulcan soccer field is under construction and there was no other suitable place to host a match between availability and pandemic protocols. Hawaii Pacific experienced something similar with not having their own field, thus the games being played at gracious host Chaminade.

"Having these matches this semester means everything to our team," said Vulcan head coach Gene Okamura. "Being back out on the field against opponents is something that our team is definitely cherishing."

It is a "free" year for Vulcan players, meaning that they can return to campus next Fall and still hold their current class standing on the soccer field. That makes this spring season, when they wouldn't normally get to play matches, a bonus in a way.

The Vulcans will play the Silverswords on Saturday at 3 pm, and the Sharks on Sunday at 2 pm.

"We definitely want to come out with better results this weekend and be more consistent throughout the entire match," Okamura added. "But we are also thankful to play and getting a chance to be together. None of us were sure this would happen, so we are certainly grateful."
