'AIEA, Hawai'i – UH Hilo newcomer Keith Ng and veteran Andrew Otani are just one shot off the lead but the Vulcan team sits ten shots back after the first round of the HPU Sharks Shootout on Sunday at the Pearl Country Club.
Ng and Otani carded one-over par 73's and are in a four-way tie for third behind the leaders Keita Okada (HPU) and Jake Sequin (UH Manoa B team), both who shot even par 72's. Otani, who is playing as an individual and is not a part of the UHH team score, had an eagle to highlight his round. Ng, a transfer from the University of British Columbia, had four birdies during his 18 holes.
HPU and the UH Manoa "B" team are tied for the team lead at 299 (+11), with the UH Manoa "A" team next (302), followed by the Vulcans (309), HPU's "B" team (310) and Chaminade (342).
Others first round scores for the Vulcans in their first 18 holes of the 2021-22 season include Nicholas Gomez (76), Noah Lau (79), Dustin Franko (81), Ethan Hironaga (81) and Junghwan Lee (81). Gomez had 13 pars to highlight his round and Lee recorded three birdies.
The teams tee off again on Monday at 11 a.m. to wrap up the two-day tournament.
