AIEA, Oahu--Andrew Otani put an explanation point on his medalist chase with a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture The Hawai`i Challenge on Tuesday at the Pearl Country Club.
Otani finished the 18 holes tied with Hawai`i Pacific's Ryan Torres, both having shot an even-par 72. Otani, a junior from Honolulu, ended the drama quickly with a birdie on No. 1, a 559 yard par-5.
Hawai`i Pacific won the three-team, one day tournament (296, +8), followed by the Vulcans (311, +23) and Chaminade (325, +37).
It was the final tune-up for all three squads prior to next week's Pacific West Conference Championships, April 18-20. The tournament will be held at the Wigwam Country Club in Litchfield Park, Arizona. On the same course during Otani's freshman season (2018-19), he made a run at the tournament title and was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year.
Today's challenge was also a good tune-up for UHH's
Dustin Franko, who finished tied for third with a +2 round of 74. His round equaled that of HPU's Kelly Dudoit and Ray Kim.
