KAHUKU, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo women's cross country team got the 2022 competition season started early Saturday morning on the north shore of O'ahu at the Big Wave Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai'i at Manoa at Kahuku Golf Course.
All seven runners placed within 14 spots of one another on the 5K course but finished with a team score of 116 for fifth place out of five teams.
Ahead of Hawai'i Hilo was Chaminade in the No. 4 spot by just a mere point.
Emma Heidelmeier led the Vulcans with a 23:25.6 time followed shortly by freshmen Lauren Runnels at 23:46.3 and Julie Hedlund at 24:41.5. Heidelmeier finished at No. 21, improving on her 2021 placement by two spots.
Aurea Streadbeck set a new 5K personal best with a 26:20.9 mark, beating her previous time by just over a full minute set last year at the Chaminade Invitational.
The Vulcans will have two weeks to prepare as they are set to return to O'ahu for the Chaminade Invitational on Sept. 17 at Kapi'olani Park.
