HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Back-to-back late-game scores by the Silverswords evened the match up to a draw as time expired between the No. 25 Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer team and Chaminade, 2-2, Sunday afternoon in Pacific West Conference action at the Saint Louis School Field to close the regular season.
Jazlynn Ellis put in two first-half goals to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead down to the waning minutes of the match.
After Hawai'i Hilo stood stout on a handful of defensive stops, Chaminade's Savannah Breeze Miranda launched a shot from midfield and watched it one-hop over Vulcans goalkeeper Phoebe Barnes' head and in the goal in the 84th minute.
With intensity picking up, the Vulcans again defended well against the Silverswords' corner-kick opportunities before Kenna Kiefer connected on a header to tie the score in the 88th minute.
Chaminade finished with 13 corner kicks to Hawai'i Hilo's four. Both teams combined for 34 total shots as Barnes recorded seven saves.
PUSH FOR POSTSEASON
Chances are slim, but the Vulcans will find their final fate Monday afternoon with the NCAA Selection Show at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Hawai'i Hilo came in at No. 6 in the NCAA West Regional Rankings released last Wednesday.
The conference champion from each of the PacWest Conference (Point Loma), California Collegiate Athletic Association (Cal State San Marcos) and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (Simon Fraser) will automatically earn one of the six postseason bids up for grabs, leaving three at-large spots to be determined by the final rankings.
The non-champions ahead of Hawai'i Hilo in last week's rankings were Seattle Pacific, Cal State Los Angeles, defending National Champion Western Washington and Concordia University Irvine.
UP NEXT
No. 25 Hawai'i Hilo moved to 10-2-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the PacWest while Chaminade moved to a 5-2-3 conference record (7-4-5 overall).
The Vulcans finish at No. 3 in the league standings as the Silverswords finish fifth.
PACWEST HAWAI'I CHALLENGE
In an effort to elevate Hawai'i-based rivalries, the PacWest Hawaii Challenge has awarded the top school in athletics competition among the state's Division II institutions going back to the late 1970s.
Comprising 10 sports that all three schools participate in, points are awarded from head-to-head Pacific West Conference matchups as well as final placements at conference-ending meets and events. At the conclusion of each sport's season, the team with the highest total gets three points while the second-highest gets two and the third-place finisher receives one.
With a few more volleyball matches to go to wrap up the fall, all three schools are evenly tied at six points a piece.
