Men's Basketball The Pacific West Conference - Russ Blunck

Ramsey Jr., Peat Earn Top Awards; Tait-Jones, Williams to All-PacWest First Team

Four total Vulcans earned PacWest Conference recognition.

Point Loma's Kaden Anderson wears No. 1 on his jersey, and now a few years after he was first issued that number, it makes total sense.

For the third year in a row, Anderson was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year today, nearly a unanimous selection by the conference's coaches. After winning the award in 2021, 2022 and now 2023, the 6-foot-8 forward may be saving his best for last.

The Washington native led his Sea Lion team to a perfect 20-0 record in PacWest play, the first time that has happened in conference history. He averaged a league-best 22.5 points a game and pulled down almost nine rebounds a contest. He shot .515 from the field, 42 percent from three-point range (68-161) and converted 85 percent of his free throw opportunities.

Now a four-time All-PacWest selection, Anderson joins select company as one of only two players to ever win the Player of the Year award three times (Lucas Alves of BYU Hawai'i was the other, 2008-10). Anderson will lead his team into this week's Pacific West Conference Championships as the No. 1 seed.

Anderson's coach, Matt Logie, was named the Coach of the Year. In his fourth season with the Sea Lions, Logie is now 78-22 in San Diego with two conference titles and one PacWest tournament banner. Currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA West Region, Logie will lead his team into the NCAA tournament next week for the fourth time in four years.

Hawai'i Hilo had a pair of players earn special awards for the first time in school history. Carlos Ramsey Jr. is the PacWest Newcomer of the Year and Nadjrick Peat is the Defender of the Year. Ramsey Jr., a sophomore, averaged 16.7 points a game and shot 54 percent from the field after transferring from Highland CC. Peat was a disruptive force in the middle of the paint on defense, leading the PacWest with 62 blocked shots. The 6-foot-11 center ranked seventh in all of Division II in the same category.

Chaminade's Ross Reeves was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year. The Silversword guard averaged 15.5 points a game and ranked third in the conference in free throw percentage (.794), was fifth in three-pointers made (2.2 per game) and was seventh in steals (1.5).

Joining Anderson on the PacWest First Team were UH Hilo Vulcans Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones and Darren Williams, Azusa Pacific's Ken West, Biola's Alex Wright and Point Loma's Luke Haupt.

It was Tait-Jones third selection to the All-PacWest team, after also winning Freshman of the Year and Newcomer in previous seasons. This year, the New Zealand native averaged 17.7 points a game, 9.1 rebounds and almost four assists a contest. For the 5-foot-8 guard Williams, it was also his third selection. The senior guard averaged 15.9 points a game, 4.6 assists and converted 84 percent of his free throw attempts.

APU's West earned his second selection. The junior forward led the Cougars at 15 points a game and averaged 5.2 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter nailed 81 three-pointers with 42 percent accuracy, leading the PacWest with three treys per game. Wright has been a consistent force for Biola for five seasons now, earning his second All-PacWest award. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 15.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

Rounding out the First Team is Point Loma's Haupt, a sophomore who does a little bit of everything for the Sea Lions. The 6-6 forward averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and paced the team with 129 assists. He also led his team with 42 steals.

All the Second and Third Team members of the All-PacWest teams are newcomers to the list, except for Chaminade's Isaac Amaral-Artharee, a Second Team pick, who gained his third selection.
