KAHUKU, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i at Hilo Women's Cross Country team opened its 2023 season on the North Shore of O'ahu at the Big Wave Invitational (5K) hosted by UH Manoa at the Kahuku Golf Course.
The Vulcans only had four of its runners participating — one below the minimum threshold to score as a team in the standings.
Still, the Vulcans got their first taste of competition for the season as Olivia Jarvis returned to action after sitting out a season ago. The graduate student finished at No. 29 with a time of 24:13.6.
The rest of the Vulcans followed shortly with Kate Smith (No. 34), Aurea Streadbeck (No. 36) and Odessa Arce (No. 40) finishing close behind.
UH Manoa placed runner in slots No. 1-7 with Jessica Duran as the top finisher at a time of 18:46.1. Other participating teams were (in order): University of the Pacific (62 pts), Chaminade (73 pts), HPU (95 pts) and Soka University of America (137 pts).
In the men's race, Soka defeated HPU in the team results.
Hawai'i Hilo will have close to two weeks before returning to O'ahu for the Chaminade Invitational Sept. 16 at Kapi'olani Park in Waikiki.
The Vulcans' lone home event is set for Sept. 30 at the Grand Naniloa Resort Banyans Golf Course.
