Silverswords Pull Away from Vulcans

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Basketball fell to Chaminade, 83-79, Saturday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

After chasing a double-digit deficit through the early middle of the second half, the Vulcans rallied a number of times to make it a one-possession game but just couldn't quite get over the hump.

Four points separated the teams at the break, but Chaminade managed to come out and double up the Vulcans at a 16-8 scoring rate for its largest lead of 12 points (59-47 at 14:37) — Hawai'i Hilo shot .750 during that spat but had four turnovers. The home team responded with a 10-0 run (just one turnover while forcing seven against the 'Swords) and then later a 6-0 spurt to make it a 75-74 deficit with three minutes remaining.

Both teams went cold (combined 0-5 FG) over the next two minutes before time simply ran out after trading baskets (and free throws) through the final 65 seconds of action. Jayden Hosein hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit back to two points with second remaining, but the Silverswords hit their free throws to seal the win.
