Softball Swept by No. 10 Western Washington

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball was shutout twice, 6-0 both times, by No. 10 Western Washington in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Mauli Ola Sports Complex at Sand Island Park.

The Vulcans committed eight combined errors on defense through both games and were also held to just seven total hits at the plate.

Saturday's matchups were the fourth and fifth games already this season against a ranked opponent. The Vulcans closed the non-conference slate at 6-7 and will begin Pacific West Conference play next weekend for their home opener.

UP NEXT: Saturday, Feb. 22 (Noon + 2 PM) vs Chaminade (Honolulu, Hawai'i (O'ahu) / Mauli Ola Sports Complex at Sand Island Park)

GAME 1: NO. 10 WESTERN WASHINGTON 6, HAWAI'I HILO 0

  • A lead-off walk followed by defensive miscues on back-to-back sacrifice bunts allowed the first Vikings runner to score in the opening frame. WWU catcher Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez drove in most of the runs with a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-RBI triple during the last at-bat.
  • The Vulcans committed four more errors the rest of the way, but starter pitcher Chloe Sales (6.0 innings) was able to minimize the damage with no runs scored through the following five innings. Sales also recorded five assists to help herself as a defender.
  • WWU pitcher Joie Baker managed to tally 10 strikeouts with just two walks allowed in the complete-game shutout.
  • Hawai'i Hilo had just one runner reach scoring position.

GAME 2: NO. 10 WESTERN WASHINGTON 6, HAWAI'I HILO 0

  • After two scoreless innings, WWU managed to get on the scoreboard with a two-RBI single for two unearned runs following a would-be third-out defensive error by the Vulcans. From there, the reigning NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up Vikings just managed to lash out six hits for four more runs through the fourth, fifth and seventh innings unaided by any walks or defensive miscues.
  • The Vulcans had four runners reach scoring position but all were left stranded.
  • Tehani Seto got the start with Madison Rabe splitting innings at 3.2 and 3.1 innings, respectively. Both pitchers gave up just two earned runs each as Seto allowed only one walk and Rabe recorded three strikeouts.

Team President Wensel

ALOHA PRESIDENT HENSEL

Newly-appointed University of Hawai'i president Wendy Hensel — donning bright-red Vulcans attire — was in attendance for Saturday's softball matchup at the Sand Island Park.

Hensel began her duties as the 16th president of the UH system at the beginning of January and has been on a statewide tour of the 10 campuses and six education centers — while already being a familiar face at UH Manoa athletics events. Hensel will make her way to the Big Island next week with stops at UH Hilo, Hawai'i Community College and HCC's Ko Education Center and Palamanui campus.

Mahalo, president Hensel!
