Softball Splits with Lumberjacks

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball split a doubleheader against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday afternoon at the Mauli Ola Sports Complex at Sand Island Park. The Vulcans took the first game, 8-3, before giving up 20 hits in an 11-3 defeat to the Lumberjacks.

Left fielder Lexie Tilton combined for four hits and three RBI with three putouts and one assist in the doubleheader.

Madison Rabe entered the pitching circle in the first game to close out the last 4.1 innings with no earned runs allowed to move to a 3-0 record.

Through the three days of non-conference play on O'ahu, the Vulcans went 4-2 with additional wins over Hillsdale, No. 22 Lewis and Nebraska-Kearney.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 6-5 as Cal Poly Humboldt moved to a 6-2 record.

CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 3, HAWAI'I HILO 8

  • Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Vulcans rallied in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on three hits to two defensive errors for five runs — all unearned. The first three runs were plated in on infield batted balls with runners on before Tilton capped the scoring with a two-RBI base hit up the middle.
  • Hawai'i Hilo added three more scores in the bottom of the sixth with RBI hits by Victoria Macias and a two-run double by Chenoa Cainglit.
  • Jayda Favela batted 3 for 4 with two runs and a RBI while collecting three putouts and two assists at short stop. Cainglit finished 2 for 2 with a run scored and six putouts at catcher.
  • Tehani Seto got the start in the pitching circle, going 2.2 inning before Rabe entered top close out the final 4.1 innings with just two hits and one unearned run allowed.

CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 11, HAWAI'I HILO 3

  • The Lumberjacks managed to total 20 hits, the most given in a single game since allowing 19 to Western Washington in Feb. 2023. Cal Poly Humboldt posted seven hits and six runs in the top of the second.
  • Chasing seven runs heading into the bottom of the third, the Vulcans rallied on two outs to drive in three runs with an RBI single by Tilton and a the-run double by Macias.
  • Tilton batted 3 for 4 with one putout in left field.
  • Hawai'i Hilo finished with eight runners left on the bases with five of them stranded in scoring position.
  • Megan Yorba made her first start in the pitching circle with her 18th career appearance for the Vulcans.
