HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball fell in two narrow contests to Biola, 4-1 and 4-3 (10 innings), Friday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Softball Field.
The opening matchup of a three-game series took just an hour and 40 minutes to be settled as the Eagles managed to plate a run in each of the first four innings. Biola managed eight hits to just two from the Vulcans. Hawai'i Hilo's lone score tied the game in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by Victoria Macias to score Jayda Favela from third base after she reached on a lead-off hit-by-pitch.
The Vulcans put just three more base runners on the rest of the way — reach on error, walk and base hit — as the top team in the PacWest Conference standings extended its win streak to eight games.
Game 2 was scoreless through four and a half innings until the Vulcans loaded the bases to come away with a one-run lead on a RBI single by Ke'alohi Markham. Mariah Antoque added another RBI infield hit in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 2-0.
With the Eagles at their last at-bats in the top of the seventh, the Vulcans committed back-to-back defensive errors to start the inning as Biola managed to tie the score later in the inning with a pair of unearned runs. The game remained knotted through two extra innings of play until Biola plated a pair of runs on a RBI single by Bridgette Trujillo and an additional defensive error in the field.
Vulcans got a run back in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly by Favela, but that would be it as the Eagles managed to steal the win for the doubleheader sweep.
Madison Rabe went the extended distance of 10.0 full innings, scattering 10 hits with just one earned run allowed.
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 15-14 in the PacWest (21-21 overall) as Biola moved to a 24-5 conference record (32-15 overall).
