HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball opened the Pacific West Conference season with a home doubleheader split against Chaminade, falling 7-2 in eight innings before capturing a 2-0 shutout win Saturday afternoon at the Vulcan Softball Field.
The Silverswords managed to get on the scoreboard early with a two-run homer in the top of the first before the Vulcans used a pair of unearned runs — one in the fourth and another in the bottom of the seventh — to knot the game at 2-all to send the contest into extra innings.
However, Chaminade managed to string together six hits to plate five runs in the top of the eighth to escape with the Game 1 win.
Vulcans redshirt-sophomore Janessa Santos tossed a one-hit complete-game shutout to help capture the Game 2 victory.
