Santos Delivers Gem in Series Finale, Vulcans Split Series at Biola

LA MIRADA, California – Hawai'i Hilo Softball dropped a one-run nine-inning decision before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory to split Saturday's doubleheader against Biola in Pacific West Conference play at Freedom Field.

Janessa Santos tossed a complete-game gem in the series finale striking out nine batters for a new career single-game high. Through the four-game series, Santos went the distance in both of the Vulcans' wins, going 17.0 combined innings with 16 strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.

Through the last three games, Lexie Tilton has batted 9 for 17 (.529) with eight RBI and three doubles. For the whole series, Tilton collected 18 putouts (1.000) in left field. Saturday's Game 1 loss saw Tilton hit 5 for 6 with five RBI.

Both teams finished the four-game series even at two wins apiece.

NOTES

  • Game 1: Hawai'i Hilo 8 - Biola 9 (9 inn.)
    • Biola managed to post a season-high 17 total hits. Hawai'i Hilo was credited with four defensive errors to give up four unearned runs.
    • Hawai'i Hilo broke away from a 3-3 ballgame with a pair of RBI doubles by Tilton — in the fourth and sixth innings — and a sacrifice fly by Kanoe Piltz to double up their score, but Biola managed to plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game right back to a tied score.
    • Tilton provided another RBI hit in the top of the seventh but Biola again managed to match the Vulcans with a run of their own to send the game into extra innings.
    • Tilton capped her five-hit, five-RBI outing with a lined shot to left field to score a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.
    • Kendall Nakano managed to hit a two-RBI double to give Biola the walk-off win.
    • Harley Acosta totaled two hits and posted her first career home run with a lead-off homers in the top of the second.
    • Madison Rabe made her first-career batting appearance, pinch hitting to draw a lead-off walk in the top of the ninth.
    • Ke'alohi Markham hit 2 for 3, scored three times and recorded three putouts in center field.
  • Game 2: Hawai'i Hilo 4 - Biola 1
    • Acosta hit a two-out two-run double down the left-field line for an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
    • Biola's Nakano managed another RBI double to put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.
    • Tilton (sacrifice fly) and Mariah Antoque (double) brought in a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning.
    • Santos held Biola to three hits, finished with nine strikeouts and surrendered just one walk. Santos brought her PacWest-leading (conference-only contests) season strikeouts total to 46 (53 overall) — 12 more than the next leading pitcher (Concordia's Kacie Gossett).
    • Biola's Dj Symons managed to total five strikeouts to bring her conference-leading overall total to 71 (but only 29 in PacWest play).
    • Piltz went 3 for 3 with 10 putouts behind the plate.

Hawai'i Hilo was voted No. 6 in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vulcans finished the 2025 regular season at No. 6 in the conference standings. The four-team 2026 PacWest Championships postseason tournament will be hosted by Biola on May 5-7 in La Mirada, California.
