Tokunaga Named National Scholar Player of the Year; Lillie to Third Team

The two central O‘ahu natives were named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Teams.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Just days before receiving her bachelor's degree from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, soon-to-be graduate Daelenn Tokunaga was announced as the United Soccer Coaches Division II Women's Soccer National Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The fifth-year senior also repeated as a United Soccer Coaches Division II Scholar All-America First Team selection and was joined this year by Jodi Lillie, a Third-Team Scholar All-American.

The two central O'ahu natives helped the Vulcans to an unbeaten regular season on the way to capturing back-to-back Pacific West Conference Championships and securing a hosting bid for the NCAA Division II West Regional. The Vulcans finished at 13-1-3 with an exit in the West Region Second Round.

Tokunaga achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.83 will graduate fall 2022 with a bachelor's in administration of justice.

Lillie held a 3.78 GPA and graduated in spring 2022 with a bachelor's in business administration with a concentration in marketing.


DAELENN TOKUNAGA

  • Started 14 of matches played in, totaling six goals and seven assists for 19 points.
  • Netted two game-winning goals, the first in a 2-0 win over Chaminade on Sept. 23 and later in a 3-0 victory over Biola on Oct. 22.
  • Season-high four points on two goals in a 4-0 win over Holy Names on Oct. 18.

Final NCAA DII Individual Rankings:

  • No. 20 Assists Per Game - 0.47
  • No. 40 Total Assists - 7
  • No. 66 Points Per Game - 1.27

JODI LILLIE

FIFTH YEAR  /  DEFENDER  /  MILILANI, HAWAI'I - MILILANI HS

  • Started all 17 matches, scoring two goals and helping the defense to nine shutouts.
  • Scored lone goal of the match on a penalty kick in 1-0 win over Stanislaus State on Sept. 10.
  • Netted game winner in a 7-0 win over Academy of Art on Oct. 1.

Final NCAA DII Team Rankings:

  • No. 12 Goals-Against Average - 0.581
  • No. 31 Shutout Percentage - 0.529

Founded in 1941 and based in Kansas City, Missouri, United Soccer Coaches has grown into the world's largest soccer coaches' organization that serves members at every level of the game.

Student-athletes on this year's Scholar All-America Teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony & Reception on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention.

United Soccer Coaches recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the season of nomination of current student-athletes at two-year and four-year institutions. To be eligible for selection, the student-athlete must be nominated by their Head Coach and meet the following criteria:

  • Plays for a current United Soccer Coaches College Services member.
  • Be a junior or above in athletic standing at the current institution.
  • Be in their second year at the current institution if a transfer student.
  • Have at least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career.
  • Play a minimum of 75 percent of games during the season of nomination and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (i.e., All-American, All-Region, minimum all-conference).
