Defending Champ Sun Devils Grab Day One Lead

KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – No. 3 nationally ranked Arizona State had three golfers among the top five individuals to help them grab a five-shot lead on the first day of the 31st annual Amer Ari Intercollegiate at the Hapuna Golf Club.

The Sun Devils turned in a score of -20 (268), which ironically doesn't include the score of co-medalist leader James Leow, who fired a -7 round of 65. Lowe is playing as ASU's No. 6, leaving him out of the team scoring. Leow shares the tournament lead with teammate Mason Andersen for the defending Amer Ari team champs.

Arizona State is five shots ahead of No. 11 ranked Texas Tech, No. 21 Washington, and No. 4 Oklahoma State, all at -15. The tournament features ten of the top 25 NCAA Division I teams in the country.

Hosts UH Hilo and the University of Hawai`i are tied for 18th with scores of 308 (+20). Keith Ng leads the Vulcans after shooting a 73 (+1), while Tyler Ogawa had the same score for the Rainbow Warriors. The only other player near par for UH Hilo was Andrew Otani with a 75.

ASU's Andersen and Leow have plenty of company near to the top of the leader board. Three players are just one shot back after firing scorching rounds of 66---ASU's Preston Summerhays, Baar Skogen of Texas Tech and Thomas Hutchinson of UC Davis. Sitting one more shot back is the nation's top ranked golfer, RJ Manke (67) of Washington. No. 5 Cameron Sisk (ASU) is another stroke behind at 68, while fellow Sun Devil and defending Amer Ari medalist David Puig shot an even par 72.

36 total holes remain for the field of 19, with play to continue at 7:30 am Hawaii Time on Friday and Saturday.
