KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – Oklahoma State seemingly came out of nowhere to best the rest of a loaded field and win the 31st annual Amer Ari Intercollegiate. The Cowboys climbed four slots from Friday's standings to win by one stroke over Texas Tech.
OSU claimed the team and individual titles in dramatic fashion. Eugenio Lopez-Chacarro eagled the final hole of the day to card a course-record 62, pushing the Cowboys one shot past Texas Tech.
The No. 4 nationally ranked (Golf Stat) Cowboys shot a tournament low round of 264, an astounding 24 strokes under par, pushing them to -50 for the tournament. No. 11 Texas Tech finished at -49 at the Hapuna Golf Course (Mauna Kea Resort) with No. 3 Arizona State collecting third place (-42). The Sun Devils were the first day leader and Texas Tech led after Friday's round.
Lopez-Chacarro made a rise up the medalist leader board on Saturday that was even more impressive than that of his team. Lopez-Chacarra shot past seven golfers on the final day to edge Texas Tech's Baard Skogen by two strokes. Lopez-Chacarra (67-68-62) finished at -19 and Skogen (66-65-68) was at -17. Two players tied for third at -16, RJ Manke of Washington and Mason Andersen of Arizona State. Manke is currently the No. 1 ranked collegiate golfer in NCAA Division I.
Oklahoma State also won the Amer Ari in 2019. Pepperdine won in 2020 and Arizona State was the 2021 winner.
Host UH HIlo slipped a bit on Saturday with their high round of the tournament (308-301-316). Noah Lau had UHH's best round today (76), and Keith Ng had the best Vulcan score for the tournament (+12), with Andrew Otani next (+15).
Next action on the course for UH Hilo will be March 7-8 at the Nighthawk Invitational in Livermore, Calif.
