DENVER, Colorado – In the final road trip of the regular season, the Hawai'i Hilo men's tennis team split its two matches over the weekend with a 6-1 win over Colorado Mesa before falling, 5-2, to No. 33 Metro State Denver.
It was a rematch between the Vulcans and the Mavericks, who both previously matched up late last month with CMU taking the 4-0 victory.
Hawai'i Hilo flipped the script and took the doubles point with Zen Yoshida and Agustin Gentile winning the deciding set, 7-5, on court one.
In singles, Filippo Di Perna, Yoshida and Ryosuke Sowa played close matches as Di Perna took both sets with 7-5 wins in two 12-point tiebreakers. Sowa closed out the match by winning the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-8, at the No. 6 spot.
Saturday's match against No. 33 MSU Denver was also a rematch, but the Roadrunners were able to come away with the win once again.
Sowa and Gentile claimed two points for the Vulcans as Gentile went to a 10-point tiebreaker and won it by a score of 10-8.
WHAT'S NEXT
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 4-9 overall as Colorado Mesa and Metro State Denver moved to 7-11 and 13-3 records, respectively.
The Vulcans close out the regular season at home against HPU on April 14.
The PacWest Championships are set for April 19–22 in Surprise, Arizona with the top eight Pacific West Conference teams qualifying.
Hawai'i Hilo came in at No. 9 in the latest conference rankings. The final poll will be released Monday afternoon.
