"Interesting" rankings put Vulcans at 11

TEMPE, Ariz.--Despite not dropping a contest while in the midst of a nine-match winning streak, the Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team saw their national ranking drop from No. 5 to No. 11 in today's listing by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The ranking, now completely computerized, saw no change in the top two spots--Barry (Fla.) and Lander (S.C.) were still 1-2, but there was shifting everywhere else. The University of Indianapolis, whom the Vulcans defeated earlier this month 5-4, moved up to No. 7. Azusa Pacific, who has been listed as high as sixth, dropped to 19th despite having a 17-0 record.

The Vulcans defeated Azusa Pacific, 7-2 on Monday, but that match did not figure into the listings, which were based on matches through Sunday.

UH Hilo's Vaclav Slezak moved up to No. 20 in the singles rankings, and in doubles Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato are No. 38. On Tuesday, that duo beat the nation's No. 1 team, APU's Oliver Frank and Oscar Schmid.

The Vulcans play at UC San Diego today (Wednesday), and at Point Loma on Friday before returning to Hilo to prep for the Pacific West Conference Championships, set for April 18-21 in Surprise, Arizona.
