Vulcans Snag PacWest Awards

IRVINE, Calif.--One month after the conclusion of perhaps the most successful men's tennis season in Hawai`i Hilo history, the awards continue to roll in.

Head Coach Tina McDermott was named the Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year, Alessandro Giuliato was selected as the Freshman of the Year, and also shared First Team Singles and Doubles honors with Vaclav Slezak to highlight the conference selections, announced on Tuesday by the conference office.

Additionally, Vulcan freshman Chun En Wu was named to the PacWest Third Team.

The Vulcans finished a program-best 17-3 on the year, reached the championship match of the Pacific West Conference tournament, and won a first round match at the NCAA National Championships. McDermott's team had victories over two squads that reached the NCAA semi-finals--Azusa Pacific and Indianapolis (teams that they split with), and their only other loss was to Division I Southern Utah. Her fellow coaches selected her as the PWC Coach of the Year after the Vulcans finished the regular season undefeated against NCAA Division II teams. They were ranked as high as fifth in the national poll, and finished the year at No. 16.

"The men were very committed to our program values and each other this year," McDermott said. "They worked hard and have been rewarded with an incredible season. Their rewards are well deserved and I am extremely proud of their achievements."

Giuliato had a stellar freshman season, finishing 18-2 at the No. 2 singles position, while also teaming with Slezak to go 17-3 on court one in doubles. That doubles duo handed APU's Oliver Frank and Christian Schmid their only loss of the season at a time when they were ranked No. 1 nationally. In the last match of the season, they defeated the No. 22 nationally ranked pair from Indianapolis. They ended the season ranked No. 14 nationally in doubles, and the freshman from Italy listed 47th in singles.

Slezak, who was the PacWest Newcomer of the Year in 2017, played at the No. 1 singles position all season long against tough competition from some of the top players in the nation. He finished 14-5, with two of those losses coming to two-time PWC POY Frank of APU. In the final match of the season for the junior from the Czech Republic, he defeated nationally ranked Nils Hoffacker from Indianapolis. Slezak ended the season ranked 38th in the final ITA national Division II listing.

Wu, a freshman from Taiwan, went 11-5 in singles on court three, and teamed with Gregory Zukeran to go 15-5 at No. 3 doubles.

In addition to the awards given to McDermott, Giuliato and Frank, Point Loma's Thomas Dafcik was named the PWC Newcomer of the Year. Joining Slezak, Giuliato and Frank on the PacWest First SinglesTeam was Dafcik, Schmid, and Maxime Gayte of Hawai`i Pacific. Selected to the First Doubles Team squad in addition to Slezak and Giuliato were Jakob Schnaitter and Frank of APU, along with the Cougars' Schmid and Antonio Pejic.
