Over the course of the next month+, we will take a look back at the top games of 2019-20--hereafter referred to as
20 for 2020. The top 20 was selected by an esteemed panel of experts, so don't @me if you disagree. :)
On March 6, the Hawai`i Hilo softball team pulled off their third straight upset win over No. 8 nationally ranked and defending conference champion Concordia. For the second time in three games, they chased NCAA All-American Callie Nunes from the pitching circle, and this time they applied a mercy rule verdict with the 8-0, five-inning win.
Vevesi Liilii hit a three-run shot in the first inning, her second home run in two days off Nunes, and
Valerie Alvarado tossed a four-hit shutout to help the Vulcans cruise to the win. UH Hilo would be leading 5-4 in the second game of the doubleheader, thanks in part to a Liilii grand slam, before rain washed away the contest at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona.
The Vulcans, who defeated the Eagles 1-0 and 2-1 the day before (
spoiler alert: more on that later in 20 for 2020), moved to 11-10 with the victory. No one knew at the time, but the three-game sweep would be the final games of the 2020 season, as COVID-19 wiped out the rest of the schedule. The wins secured UHH's 31st winning season in 33 years of competition.
