No. 16: Tennis Team Upsets No. 12 (Almost)

Over the course of the next month+, we will take a look back at the top games of 2019-20--hereafter referred to as 20 for 2020. The top 20 was selected by an esteemed panel of experts, so don't @me if you disagree. :)

Coming in at No. 16.....On February 23, the men's tennis team was playing a series of matches in Waco, Texas again a foursome of top Division II and Division III teams. They had lost a nail bitter to Southeastern Oklahoma State (4-3), had defeated St. Mary's (TX) 5-2, and were next to square off against No. 12 nationally ranked St. Edward's (TX). On paper, the match versus the Hilltoppers would be their toughest of the trip. The Vulcans got off to a hot start by claiming the doubles point, and Alan Cincunegui made the team score 2-0 with a win on court six. St. Edward's would win the next two singles matches to tie the score at 2-2, but UHH's Martin Soukal would pick up a huge win on court one, defeating No. 4 ranked Anish Sriniketh 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Leading 3-2, needing just one more victory to clinch, both Santiago Di Loreto and Luca Checchia were in the third set of their matches when the rains came to wash the match out. It goes into the record books with no winner, although all the individual matches count. Speaking of record books, sadly St. Edward's program would mark their final entries in the coming days, as the university would cut the program for good in April.
