No. 17 Vulcans, Sharks Play to Scoreless Tie

No more overtime for regular-season play as women's soccer draws even.

HILO, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i at Hilo women's soccer team had its home opener Saturday afternoon on the new turf at the Vulcan Soccer Field but played to a scoreless-tie with Hawai'i Pacific in non-conference action.

The 17th-ranked Vulcans came in red-hot on a four-game winning streak to open the season while the Sharks were still looking for their first win.

Both teams were equal with four shots-on-goal and four saves each for both goalkeepers — Lolo Retsky (Calabasas, Calif./Sierra Canyon School) (4-0-1) for Hawai'i Hilo and Sophia Garrido (0-1-2) for HPU. In total, the Vulcans had a five-shot advantage in total attempts at 12-7.

Filippa Graneld (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholms Idrottsgymnasium) led UH Hilo with five shots, one on goal.

Hawai'i Hilo was able to put itself in position for a few one-on-one scoring opportunities but couldn't take advantage as HPU's Garrido came up with the save each time.

What's Next

UH Hilo now stands at 4-0-1 overall while HPU is at 0-3-2.

The Vulcans will be back in action at home next Friday, Sept. 23 to host Chaminade (3-1-0) to wrap-up non-conference play.

Sharks host the Silverswords Sept. 20 to also finish out their non-conference slate.

No More Overtime

In April 2022, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved eliminating overtime during the regular season.

Previously, teams played two additional 10-minute periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie.

In conference tournaments and NCAA postseason games, teams will play two 10-minute overtime periods. If the game remains tied, a penalty-kick shootout will be held to determine the winner.
