No. 12: Vulcans take No. 1 Cougars to OT in Upset Bid

Over the course of the next month+, we will take a look back at the top games of 2019-20--hereafter referred to as 20 for 2020. The top 20 was selected by an esteemed panel of experts, so don't @me if you disagree. :)

Coming in at No. 12 is a Vulcan loss that was oh-so-close to becoming national news. On October 28, the UHH men's soccer team took the field under the lights at Azusa Pacific--to face the No. 1 nationally ranked and undefeated Cougar team. The Vulcans were 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific West Conference at the time, and no one in their right soccer minds would have give the visitors a chance against the 12-0 (5-0 PWC) Cougars, especially at the Cougar Soccer Complex in Azusa. But the Vulcans were coming off an impressive road victory at Biola and were playing perhaps their best soccer of the season. APU scored the first two goals of the match to seemingly be on their way to another win at the soccer pitch, but UHH then stormed back with goals from Devan Yoshimura and Jorge Martinez to tie things up at 2-2. Michael Harre was outstanding at the other end of the field, notching a school-record 14 saves and helping to send the match into overtime. The home crowd of 348 was nervous as can be before APU's Isaac Bawa ended the sudden death drama with less than a minute to go before overtime number two (99:04), edging the upset-minded Vulcans, 3-2. The Cougars would go on to end the regular season unbeaten (18-0) before they were upset in the first round of the NCAA playoffs by Colorado School of Mines.
