No. 10: Baseball Vulcans Send PWC Notice with 3-2 Win Over Cougs

Over the course of the next month+, we will take a look back at the top games of 2019-20--hereafter referred to as 20 for 2020. The top 20 was selected by an esteemed panel of experts, so don't @me if you disagree. :)

On March 6, the Vulcan baseball team headed into the second day of a four-game series with defending Pacific West Conference champion Azusa Pacific, having split the first two games the day before. While sitting with a chance to win the series or gain a split was glorious, the Vulcans had used a lot of pitching the day before--nine different UHH hurlers had toed the rubber. That included UH Hilo's ace relief tandem of Brandyn Lee-Lehano and John Kea, who had earned the win and save respectively the day before during an 8-5 series-opening win. But in a surprise move by Vulcan head coach Kallen Miyataki, Lee-Lehano took the hill again, this time in a starting role for the first time in 2020. He responded with a bulldog-like effort, going eight innings and allowing only one earned run and three hits. That paved the way for Kea to come in and close things out, giving the Vulcans a 3-2 win. The Cougars would bounce back to win the nightcap for a series split, but the Vulcans had served notice to the rest of the PacWest that they would be a contender in 2020. The rest of the story of course, is that UHH's season ended at 4-2 in conference play before another game was played because of COVID-19.
