No. 4: Big Brother Rallies to Stun Vulcans on Walk-off Home Run

Down to the Top Five!! Our countdown of the top UH Hilo games of 2019-20 takes us today to No. 4 when the Vulcan baseball team NEARLY pulled off a stunner against Big Brother Hawai`i-Manoa at Les Murakami Stadium.

On February 7, in just their third game of the season, the Vulcans took on the Rainbow Warriors. For many of the local Vulcans who grew up idolizing Hawai`i-Manoa, it was a dream come true just to play at Murakami. For Hawai`i, it almost became a nightmare. The Vulcans had a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth and were two outs away from the win before UH's Dustin Demeter hit a two-run shot for the walk-off win. Earlier, Vulcan sophomore Jacob Igawa had a home run and two doubles to help provide the offense, and a committee of pitchers had held Hawai`i to just four hits prior to Demeter's blast in front of over 3,000 fans. The following day, the Vulcans again had a 4-3 lead, this time in the seventh inning, before the Rainbow Warriors countered with three runs in the bottom half to regain a 6-4 lead. The Vulcans had 11 hits in the game, including three and a home run by Jaryn Kanbara. Hawai`i was no slouch in 2020, as they would go on to defeat No. 2 nationally ranked Vanderbilt and take three of four games versus Oregon.
